University Science High School

A History of Fostering Excellence in Science and Technology

Establishment and Evolving Focus (1976-1983):

The University Science High School (USHS) was established in 1976 by the Central Luzon State University Board of Regents under Board Resolution No. 1622. Its initial mission was to serve as a premier institution for students seeking careers in science and technology, fields crucial for the nation's ongoing development.

In response to evolving needs, the curriculum was revised in 1978 through Board Resolution No. 1780. The school's name temporarily changed to Agricultural Science High School to reflect a strengthened emphasis on agricultural components, catering to students aiming for higher agricultural education. This revision did not diminish the original focus of preparing students for intensive training in broader science and technology fields.

Further curriculum enrichment occurred in 1979, solidifying agricultural components while ensuring it met the needs of students seeking admission to diverse science and technology fields at the university level.

Maintaining Legacy and Expanding Opportunities (1983-Present):

In 1983, recognizing the school's enduring commitment to science and technology as a whole, the name reverted to the original University Science High School. This reflected the school's unwavering dedication to these critical disciplines.

For almost  half a century, USHS has remained a valuable asset to CLSU, contributing significantly to the university's reputation for academic excellence in science and technology. The school consistently produces high-caliber graduates through its rigorous academic programs.

Selective Admissions and a Diverse Curriculum:

Admission to USHS is highly competitive. Prospective students must excel in a comprehensive entrance examination. The top 60 scorers from an annual average of 400 applicants are chosen, with an additional ten slots reserved for faculty and staff dependents.

The USHS curriculum provides a strong foundation in core subjects like biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, English, Filipino, social studies, and the arts. Additionally, students benefit from a range of elective courses, allowing them to explore their interests and hone their skills. These electives may encompass environmental science, robotics, and agricultural science.

Enriching the academic experience further, the school offers a variety of extracurricular activities. These opportunities allow students to delve deeper into their passions, develop teamwork abilities, and engage with the school community. Examples include the SBO-SSG (Student Body Organization and Supreme Student Government) and The Researcher (Journalism) club.
